The Sailors Return was one of the many beerhouses to open in Wivenhoe in the early 1860s as the village saw a large increase in building and population that accompanied the arrival of the railway. The Sailors Return was the only beerhouse on The Quay and had a blacksmith's shop to the rear. In common with so many other Wivenhoe beerhouses it.
